-B.A. in History from Christopher Newport University and M.A. in History from Old Dominion University
-For over twenty years, he has led battlefield tours in Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Virginia

-Author of two books and many scholarly articles, as well as serving as the editor of another twelve books
-In recognition for his work in public history, the governor of Kentucky commissioned him a colonel in 2014
